JOB PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Vice President of Instruction, the Dean of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences provides visionary leadership in support of teaching and learning for our students. This position leads and supports the delivery of instruction and the delivery of career and life skills in the following areas: Anthropology, Arabic, Aramaic, American Sign Language, Art, Communication, English, English as a Second Language, Ethnic Studies, Gender Studies, Kumeyaay Studies, History, Humanities, Music, Philosophy, Psychology, Political Science, Religious Studies, Sociology, Social Work, Spanish, and Theatre Arts.
Administrators may be assigned responsibility for a combination of day, evening, and weekend programs, on-campus and off site. Each instructional Dean assumes responsibility for some college-wide functions and is responsible for grants management in their areas. Managers will be expected to perform other duties consistent with their job description.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Any combination equivalent to: Master's degree from an accredited institution plus five years of achievement in management, supervision or leadership programs, departments or divisions within an institution of higher education, with emphasis in one or more of the areas to which the Dean position is assigned.
NECESSARY QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to advance the College's vision, mission, and values in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences' programs and services, and within the institution.
- Demonstrated commitment to and support of diversity, equity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility in a comprehensive, student-centered environment that facilitates student learning and success.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to, and an understanding of, students from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, racial, and ethnic backgrounds; students who are differently abled, and students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
- Ability to advance the College's strategic goals related to access, success, retention, eliminating equity gaps, and increasing equity in hiring in the Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences' programs and within the institution.
- Provides the administration, direction, planning, and coordination of instructional disciplines and departments in accordance with legal requirements, district policies, and effective instructional principles and practices.
- Ability to establish overall goals, objectives and plans; prepare reports and presentations; initiate and participate in overall program review and planning, including learning outcome development and assessment, communicate statutes, district and college policies and philosophies to Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences staff.
- Ability to support Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences faculty in curriculum planning and development; evaluate and recommend instructional materials, equipment and facilities.
- Ability to direct the recruitment, selection, assignment, supervision, and evaluation of instructional personnel and classified staff. Provides leadership with orientations and in-service education for the professional development of program faculty and staff.
- Demonstrated ability developing course schedules to meet strategic enrollment planning principles and goals.
- Experience coordinating program review and planning, curriculum development and outcomes assessment.
- Ability to plan, recommend and implement multiple budgets for assigned areas; upon expenditure variations, take necessary actions to assure compliance with budget limitations and established fiscal policies.
- Demonstrated experience participating in college and district governance through councils, committees, workgroups, and taskforces.
- Ability to facilitate communication and understanding of perspectives among faculty, staff, students, and the community within the framework of a multi-college district, as well as the resolution of student, instructor, and staff conflicts.
- Ability to consistently perform duties with concern, courtesy, and respect for others; employ a team approach through collaboration and empowerment of staff; exhibit creativity and flexibility in a time of continuing change; and to seek solutions using effective problem-solving techniques.
- Demonstrated effective oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS:
- Ability to interpret, articulate, and implement pertinent state and federal laws and regulations concerning community colleges, including Education Code, Title 5, and other administrative regulations.
- Ability to advocate for and implement instructional support services and programs including dual enrollment and learning communities (such as Umoja and Puente) that promote student success and completion of their educational goals.
- Ability to successfully delegate, ensure adherence to College and District policies, practices and procedures, and hold others responsible while instilling confidence among the faculty and staff.
- Experience writing successful grant applications, and experience with resource management.
