Job Summary: Job SummaryTeach college-level courses in the Humanities, Philosophy, and/or World Religions, in accordance with qualifications, for the Humanities & Languages Division of Salt Lake Community College.Samples of courses currently taught include Introduction to Humanities, Introduction to Philosophy, Social Ethics, Reasoning and Rational Decision-Making, and World Religions.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties: 1. Becomes familiar with and follows the current course curriculum outlines, and engages in accepted best pedagogical practices to maximize student learning.
2. Collaborates with the course lead/mentor and other instructors to ensure consistency in course syllabi, pedagogy, assignments, ePortfolio work, testing, grading, and so forth.
3. Supports the Colleges mission, vision, and values by incorporating appropriate cultural material representing a broad variety of ethnicities, national origins, socioeconomic groups and other identities, in additional to using inclusive pedagogical practices in the classroom.
4. Maintains accurate and complete student attendance records, grades, and other classroom documentation as applicable. Grades must be maintained on the Colleges learning management system.
5. Meets with course mentor and/or the hiring supervisor as needed.6. Responds to department inquiries and emails promptly, usually with 2 business days.1. Becomes familiar with, and abides by, all college policies with immediate priority given to those policies that govern interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments throughout the organization.
2. Maintains professional etiquette in communications with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
3. Provides appropriate and timely feedback for all assignments.
4. Returns graded assignments in a timely fashion per department standards.
5. Maintains student attendance records (for Financial Aid and departmental purposes) and grades.
6. Conducts a variety of appropriate evaluations of student performance.
7. Informs students of progress-to-date periodically and assigns and submits grades by published deadlines.
8. Assists in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment.
9. Prepares and submits incident reports to Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
10. Maintains professional and collegial behavior.
11. Handles/responds to student concerns/complaints, and responds to student communications and inquiries promptly (generally within 2 business days).
12. Maintains professional appearance as defined by the discipline and/or College procedure.
13. Completes all required employee trainings in a timely fashion.
14. Knows and adheres to FERPA guidelines.
15. Provides ADA accommodations as requested.
16. Other job related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications: MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
1) M.A. or Ph.D. in Humanities, Interdisciplinary Studies, American Studies, Art History, European or World History, Literature, Philosophy, or Comparative Religion.
2) One year of experience teaching Humanities, Philosophy, or World Religion at the college level.
3) Knowledge of high impact pedagogical practices, inclusive pedagogical methods, and in teaching critical thinking.
4) Native or near-native level of fluency in English.
5) Ability to conduct classes in-person, on the SLCC campuses.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:1) M.A. or Ph.D. in the Humanities, Philosophy, or Religious Studies, or in a related discipline, such as Interdisciplinary Studies, American Studies, Art History, World History, Literature, Comparative Religion, Gender Studies, or Ethnic Studies.2) Two or more years of experience teaching Humanities, Philosophy, or World Religion at the college level.3) Training in high impact pedagogical practices, inclusive pedagogical methods, and in teaching critical thinking.4) Skilled in the use of Canvas or other learning management systems.5) Knowledge of and experience in online instructional methodologies.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 1) Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, culture, ethnic background, and abilities, to maintain good working relationships across the College. The ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic background of community college students, faculty and staff, including those with disabilities.2) Highly skilled in conducting email correspondence.3) Able to use databases and Microsoft Office programs with ease.
Non-Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Special Instructions: This is a pooled position. The department reviews applications as positions become available.Applicants must currently be authorized to work in the United States.Special Instructions: 1) In accordance with SLCC policy, adjunct positions are offered on a semester by semester basis with no guarantee of continued employment.2) Official transcripts are required for those who are offered employment within in 30 days of hire.3) An interview is required prior to hiring. Additional documentation may be requested.4) Adjuncts who are hired, but who do not complete required meetings with their faculty mentor/supervisor prior to the beginning of classes, will have their contracts rescinded and will not be allowed to teach.5) In accordance with Board of Regents policy, SLCCs Human Resources will conduct a criminal background check on instructors if concurrent enrollment (K-12) students are assigned to classes.
